Gary J. Miller is a co-founder and Executive VP/R&D of Exactech, Inc. – incorporated in 1985 as a developer, manufacturer, and distributor of orthopaedic implants and biologics worldwide.
A native Floridian from Jacksonville, Gary has been married to Suzy Liss Miller (UF – BAED ’70) for 51 years! They have 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Gary received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1970 from the University of Florida, Master’s in Mechanical Engineering (Biomechanics) from MIT in 1972, and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (Biomechanics/Biomaterials emphasis) in 1977 from the University of Florida — proudly a double Gator!
He joined the UF Department of Orthopaedics faculty in 1977; serving as a post-doctoral fellow, assistant, and associate professor; and as a Director of Orthopaedic Research and Biomechanics until leaving in 1997 to concentrate fully on his duties at Exactech. Over the years he served as an Adjunct Associate Professor in various departments of the UF College of Engineering and College of Veterinary Medicine and now holds a Courtesy Professorship in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
He is past Chairman of the HWCOE Dean’s Advisory Board (2019-2020), remains active on the DAB and enjoys lecturing, mentoring and participating on the industrial advisory boards of UF MAE and BME. Gary holds more than 20 US and foreign patents. Additional creative work includes book chapters, more than 165 articles and abstracts in biomechanics/biomaterials and implant and instrument design lectures presented worldwide.
